Medécins Sans Frontières (MSF) has received 13 patients with gunshot injuries following a shooting incident that took place at a teashop in Galkayo South in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 8th June 2011.
Two of the patients, who were seriously wounded and required emergency surgery, have been evacuated by family members for further specialized treatment.
The other 11 patients sustained fractures and soft tissue injuries, and have all have received treatment in Galkayo South Hospital.
Four people died before they could reach the hospital and all were civilian casualties.
MSF medical staff provide paediatric care; maternity care, including emergency obstetric care; therapeutic feeding; tuberculosis treatment and surgery at South Galcayo Hospital, in the Mudug Region. This is the only free surgery available for people in the area and many patients come from as far away as Ethiopia to receive care. In 2010, over 45,000 consultations took place.
MSF is an independent medical organisation with projects in eight regions of South Central Somalia. Over 1,400 Somali staff, supported by approximately 100 staff in Nairobi, provide primary health care, malnutrition treatment, health care and support to displaced people, surgery, as well as water and relief supply distributions. MSF does not accept any government funding for its projects in Somalia, all its funding comes from private donors.
